FDA Warns Against Zicam Use

On Tuesday, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning to consumers, urging them to stop using certain Zicam products.  This warning comes after several reports of people permanently losing sense of smell as a result of Zicam use.  More than 130 reports of loss of smell associated with certain Zicam products have been reported since 1999.  Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel, Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs, and Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs, kids size are the products that have been linked to long-lasting or permanent loss of smell.

Many lawsuits have been filed against Zicam’s maker, Matrixx, but the company claims the allegations are "unfounded and misleading."  Regardless, the FDA has warned Matrixx that its products can no longer be marketed without FDA approval.
