Pfizer Sees Rise From Viagra, But Chantix Turns To Ash

Thursday, October 02 2008

Pfizer announced its quarterly earnings on Wednesday, revealing that sales of their anti-impotence drug Viagra rose 21%, while their quit-smoking drug Chantix lost 35% of its U.S. sales. Viagra continues to deliver for Pfizer, despite the strong competition from Eli Lilly's Cialis. The demand for Chantix, however, has decreased due to safety concerns. In January, Chantix began carrying the warning that states the drug may caause "serious neuropsychiatric symptoms, including changes in behavior, agitation, depressed mood, suicidal ideation and suicidal behavior." Pfizer points out, ""A causal relationship between CHANTIX and these reported symptoms has not been established," but that seems to do little to assuage people's fears.
