The 2007 numbers reported by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show an increase in the number of new chlamydia and syphilis infections. These two sexually transmitted diseases have been on the rise for three consecutive years, and chlamydia has reached an all-time high – more than a million new cases each year. While the numbers are alarming, the increase could simply be a result of more people being screened for STDs. When a person isn’t screened, the infection isn’t counted by the CDC.
