Can Aspirin Reduce Breast Cancer Risk?

There have been conflicting reports in the past, but a new study shows that aspirin and ibuprofen may reduce the risk of breast cancer in women.  The study evaluated 7 million women from 38 different studies to determine that women who took aspirin were 13 percent less likely to develop breast cancer, while those who took ibuprofen reduced their likelihood of developing breast cancer by 21 percent.

Despite these findings, doctors caution women against taking aspirin or ibuprofen with the hopes of reducing their own risk, as such action can cause digestive tract bleeding and/or heart problems.  With the current information available, doctors do not believe that  aspirin or ibuprofen should be used as part of any breast cancer therapy.

The findings of this study can be seen in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
