Insomnia happens when your sleep-wake cycle, or your internal clock, is disrupted. It can be caused by many factors: stress, illness, pain, jet lag, sleep apnea, excessive physical or emotional arousal, shift work, a sedentary lifestyle, worrying about sleep, depression, and other factors.

Insomnia is more common in people over age 60 and especially in women over 40. It’s estimated that up to one third of the population suffers from some type of insomnia.

Types of Insomnia
Insomnia presents itself in a variety of different ways… once-in-a-while insomnia, chronic insomnia, insomnia that keeps you from falling asleep, insomnia that wakes you up frequently during the night, insomnia that wakes you up too early, and insomnia that allows you to sleep, but poorly.

There are three main types of insomnia:

Transient Insomnia: This is short-term insomnia that typically lasts from a few nights to a few weeks. Transient insomnia may cause next-day sleepiness, mood changes, and performance impairment.

Intermittent Insomnia: This is when you have periods of transient insomnia that occur on and off over months or years. It can lead to chronic insomnia.

Chronic Insomnia: This is long term insomnia – difficulty sleeping for more than a month. Chronic insomnia is often related to more serious problems like depression, memory impairment, accidents, missed work, and increased visits to the doctor.

Self Help for Insomnia

Keep a tight schedule going to bed and waking up at the same time each day.

Avoid daytime naps so you’re more tired at bedtime.

Don’t eat heavy meals before going to bed. Avoid caffeine, alcohol and tobacco.

Exercise, even 15 minutes a day, can help you relax and get a better sleep.

Warm milk before bed really works because it causes a chemical reaction that increases serotonin in the brain, making you feel relaxed and calm.

If self help doesn’t improve your insomnia, it may be time to discuss sleep aids with your doctor.

Prescription Rozerem For Insomnia
Rozerem is a sleep aid tablet that’s prescribed mainly for patients who have trouble falling sleep. It works by targeting the inner clock that determines our sleeping/waking cycle. Rozerem "tweaks" that part of the brain, allowing us to fall asleep easily and wake up without that groggy, hung over feeling (and without affecting memory or balance, as some other sleep aids do).

One reason so many doctors prescribe Rozerem for their patients is because it has not been designated by the government as a "controlled substance". There is no evidence it will cause dependence or addiction.

So you can take Rozerem as you need it and stop when you don’t. The most common side effects are minor ones, such as drowsiness, dizziness and fatigue.

The terms "Sleep Aids" and "Sleeping Aids" refer to the various therapies, medications and supplements that can help you enjoy a sound and peaceful sleep when stress, travel or other disruptions keep you awake. Sleeping aids and pills are nothing new as our ancestors have been using herbal potions and the opiate laudanum to induce sleep for centuries.

The early 1900s witnessed the introduction of barbiturates, and in the 1960s, benzodiazepines arrived on the scene. There are many safer classes of drugs like non benzodiazepine hypnotics that can easily help us to overcome sleeping disorders today.

Even though you might know the tips for a good night’s sleep like sticking to a regular sleep schedule, regular exercise, avoiding caffeine and daytime naps, controlling stress, and relaxation before bedtime, sleep can still elude you. Sleeping aids can help you in such circumstances. They are available in many forms that cure and treat various types of sleeping disorders.

Sleeping Disorders

Sleeping disorders may appear in many forms, like failing to sleep the whole night, feeling sleepy and tired during the day though you had enough sleep, having crawling sensations in your legs, and snoring. Some of the most commonly occurring sleeping disorders are:

Insomnia – failing to sleep

Sleep apnea – breathing interruptions during sleep

Restless legs syndrome – a tingling or prickly sensation in the legs

Narcolepsy – sleep attacks during the day

Parasomnias- nightmares, night terrors, sleep walking, sleep talking, head banging, wetting the bed and grinding your teeth

Insomnia

Insomnia is a common type of sleeping disorder where you have trouble falling or staying asleep, or you wake up feeling dull and tired. People with insomnia would have some or all of the following symptoms:

Trouble falling asleep

Waking up repeatedly during the night, and not able to go back to sleep again

Waking up too early in the morning

Feeling tired upon waking

Sleepiness and sleep attacks during the day

Irritability

Problems with concentration or memory

Insomnia Causes

There are many reasons for insomnia. Insomnia is sometimes caused by a medical problem (primary insomnia). It can also be caused by depression and certain medications. Insomnia can either be a short term problem lasting less than a month (acute) or a problem that lasts longer than a month (chronic).

The main causes of acute insomnia include:

Stress

Illness

Emotional or physical discomfort

Environmental aspects like noise, light, or extreme temperatures that affect sleep

Specific medications used for the treatment of colds, allergies, depression, high blood pressure and asthma

Working a night shift.

The causes of chronic insomnia include:

Depression and/or anxiety

Chronic stress

Pain or discomfort at night

Insomnia Treatment

There are many treatments for sleep disorders. Sometimes just having regular sleep habits, lifestyle change, exercise etc. can help in overcoming insomnia and other sleeping disorders. However, it is always best to ask a doctor for a proper diagnosis to identify the cause of insomnia to ensure you are prescribed the correct treatment.

There are medical as well as self-help non-medical treatments for insomnia.

Medical Treatment of Insomnia

Using medication is the most popular way of treating insomnia. Reports say that almost 25% of Americans take some form of medication for the treatment of insomnia. You are advised to take insomnia medications only when:

The cause of insomnia has been identified

Sleep troubles cause problems in carrying out daily activities

Behavioral approaches are ineffective

Insomnia is acute (temporary or short-term.)

Insomnia occurs along with a known medical or physical condition

Insomnia Medication Treatment Guidelines

When you start taking medication for the treatment of insomnia, be sure the medication:

Starts with the lowest possible effective dose

Is for a short term, if used nightly

Is alternating or sporadic, if used long-term

Is accompanied with good sleep practices and/or behavioral approaches

Hypnotics, Antidepressants and Anxiolytics

The choice of a prescription medication for the treatment of insomnia greatly depends on the patient’s diagnosis, history of drug or alcohol abuse, age, medical conditions etc. Generally, there are three types of prescription medications for the treatment of insomnia: Hypnotics, Antidepressants and Anxiolytics.

Hypnotics are the most effective prescription sleeping aids that induce and promote sleep.

Antidepressants are the best solution for the treatment of insomnia when the cause of the sleeping disorder is related to depression. However, a patient should discuss the problem with a doctor as some antidepressants can also cause insomnia.

Anxiolytics are anti-anxiety drugs prescribed for the treatment of insomnia due to anxiety.

Self-Help & Non-Medicinal Insomnia Treatments

Self-help and non-medicinal treatments of insomnia may include:

Improved sleep habits and environment (sleep hygiene)

Stress management and relaxation techniques

Acupuncture and massage

Cognitive behavior therapy and

Herbal remedies, nutritional supplements, and homeopathic remedies

Some people prefer non-medicinal and self–help strategies to treat insomnia as they tend to be less addictive, and drug-free alternatives have fewer side effects. Self-help and non-medicinal treatments of insomnia may also be less expensive than prescription drugs.

Effectiveness of Hypnotics for Insomnia Treatment

Clinical studies have examined data that proves the efficacy and reliability of hypnotics like Rozerem for the treatment of insomnia. After comparing hypnotics to a placebo for the treatment of insomnia, experts have come to the conclusion that hypnotics like Rozerem:

shorten the time needed to fall asleep

increase the total sleep time

decrease the number of repeated awakenings

enhance sleep quality

How Sleep Aid Rozerem Differs From Traditional Sleep Medications

Whether you’re the occasional victim of insomnia or a chronic insomniac, the effects of this annoying condition can affect your health and happiness. Insomnia involves much more than just not being able to sleep properly.

If left unchecked, insomnia can wreak havoc in many areas of your life such as job productivity, academic performance, driving, and both personal and business relationships. People who frequently suffer from sleep deprivation due to insomnia have a difficult time dealing with and adjusting to the challenges of everyday life.

Definition of Insomnia

Doctors often separate insomnia patients into two different categories, temporary and chronic insomnia.

Temporary insomnia is short-term and can sometimes flare up or recur when stressful events happen. Patients with temporary insomnia may be able to remedy the problem without the use of sleep aids or a great deal of physician intervention.

Chronic insomnia is a more serious and debilitating problem. Patients with chronic insomnia are those who have had the condition on an ongoing basis for six months or longer.

Treating and Diagnosing Insomnia

Although insomnia is often a normal, natural response to a stressful event or a short-term reaction to illness or pain, patients who have ongoing difficulty obtaining a restful nights sleep should seek a physician’s assistance. Ignoring the problem or trying to treat insomnia on your own can often aggravate or prolong it.

Self-prescribed over the counter sleep aids are a popular method for treating insomnia. Many adults rely on caffeine or other stimulants to keep them awake and alert after an all night bout with insomnia. Instead of dealing with the actual problem and trying to determine the cause, they become victim to a vicious cycle of stimulants and sleep aids.

The First Step Towards Better Sleep

While sleep aids can be beneficial when properly prescribed, the first step in treating insomnia is to determine a cause for the condition. Today’s insomnia sufferers are frequently referred to a sleep clinic where the degree and nature of the sleep condition can be determined.

Patients’ sleep patterns are carefully monitored and doctors can often pinpoint whether the condition is due to stress or a breathing disorder, which is common in both sleep apnea and narcolepsy.

Tips for Insomnia Sufferers

After assessing a patient’s individual sleep pattern, a doctor may recommend a number of self-help suggestions and/or the use of sleep aids. The following tips can be beneficial to patients experiencing temporary or long-term insomnia.

Avoid caffeine and other stimulants for at least three hours before bedtime.

Try to set a regular sleep schedule. Altering your sleep pattern by just an hour or two a night is enough to throw some people’s sleep cycle off balance.

Exercise on a regular basis to alleviate stress and tire your body.

Keep an ongoing journal of your sleep schedule. If you have more difficulty sleeping on some days than others, make a note of the foods you consumed and any stressful events that may have contributed to the insomnia.

If you’re a light sleeper, purchase a "white noise machine" to drown out annoying background noise and disruption. Simple ear plugs can also work wonders, once you get used to wearing them.

Keep bedroom lighting to a minimum and don’t leave the television on while trying to fall asleep. Better yet, remove the TV set from your bedroom and listen to music or read for relaxation instead.

Traditional Sleep Aids

For decades, doctors have been prescribing sleep aids to treat insomnia. Although sleep aids are beneficial in some instances, it is important not to overlook the harmful side effects that can sometimes occur.

One of the most common disadvantages of traditional sleep aids is they can become habit forming and addictive. Once a patient becomes reliant on the drug, his body actually becomes dependent upon it to sleep.

Other common annoying side effects are daytime drowsiness, memory problems, and a general state of confusion. While the patient may be sleeping well at night, his or her body may experience trouble adjusting to the effects of the medication during the day.

Headaches, irregular or loss of menstrual periods and lack of sex drive can also occur. Some patients may find the side effects of sleep aids to be nearly as troubling as the insomnia itself.

Rozerem, A Different Kind of Sleep Aid

Unlike other sleep aids, Rozerem is not classified as a controlled substance. Insomnia patients taking Rozerem do not have to worry about becoming addicted or dependent upon their medication.

In the past, doctors often prescribed sleep aids to be taken every night before bedtime. With Rozerem there’s no need to take your medication daily. Simply take the pills on the nights you can’t sleep and skip them when you don’t have insomnia.

In addition, Rozerem has been tested and proven not to produce the common daytime side effects linked to other sleep aid medications. Patients can safely take Rozerem without feeling groggy and unproductive the following morning.

If you’re tired of battling insomnia on your own or have tried other sleep aids without success, consider contacting your doctor about treating insomnia with prescription Rozerem.

Natural Sleep Aids Plus Relaxation Techniques Can Help

For light sleepers, insomnia can be an annoying problem. The barking dog outside. The ticking of the alarm clock. Even the sound of your partner shifting in the bed can disturb your Zs.

If you’re tired of awakening at every little sound, maybe it’s time you tried some natural sleep techniques coupled with a non-addictive sleep aid such as Rozerem. Although being a light sleeper is annoying, there’s no reason you can’t ease your insomnia with a few sleep-enhancing tricks.

Insomnia Overview

Insomnia is a common sleep disorder in which the patient either has trouble falling asleep or cannot remain asleep for an extended period of time. Although most people have experienced a sleepless night or two during their lifetime, often it’s connected to a specific stress-related event such as the loss of a loved one or a job related anxiety. Doctors refer to patients in this category as temporary insomniacs. The insomnia symptoms will usually disappear when the underlying stress is resolved.

Patients with chronic insomnia are those who have battled sleeplessness for a period of six months or longer. In these insomniacs, doctors may have a difficult time pinpointing the exact cause of the condition.

Left untreated, chronic insomnia can lead to other serious problems such as depression. Due to fatigue, people with chronic insomnia may also experience a total lack of motivation or enthusiasm. As the body becomes worn down, insomnia sufferers have trouble concentrating. Performing daily routine tasks can be difficult. They may even undergo behavior changes.

Although sleep aids can help patients achieve better rest, chronic insomniacs can become addicted to certain prescription sleep aids. While they may be sleeping longer hours than before, their bodies can experience a number of unpleasant side effects related to the long-term use of sleep aids.

Today a greater number of people suffer from insomnia than ever before. Did you know that before the invention of electricity, the average American slept around nine hours a night? Only a small fraction of the current population acquires this much sleep on a regular basis. In fact, our current society might view individuals who sleep nine hours as lazy or unproductive.

How Your Work Schedule Can Aggravate Insomnia

In order to function properly, our bodies must be in tune with their internal clock or circadian rhythm. Most folks acknowledge they feel more productive after a restful night’s sleep. But for patients with insomnia, getting enough sleep and feeling refreshed is a rare occurrence.

In today’s hectic workplace, an increasing number of employees are being forced to toil during hours that conflict with the body’s natural sleep schedule. Insomnia sufferers who work afternoon or night shifts have an additional burden to overcome. These light sleepers must deal with sunlight disturbances as well as noise issues. For them, falling asleep and staying asleep may seem next to impossible.

Fortunately, there are a number of effective natural techniques that can help insomnia patients relieve their condition. You may wish to try these natural methods first before seeking relief from prescription sleep aids like Rozerem. These helpful methods can even lessen your long-term dependence on sleep aids.

Natural Methods to Help Light Sleepers Combat Insomnia

Before attempting to treat insomnia with natural sleep aids or methods, you may wish to consult with your physician first. Neurologists who specialize in sleep disorders are highly qualified to assist you in determining the cause of your insomnia. Patients who can first identify the reasons for their insomnia are more likely to have a successful outcome.

Helpful Tips for Light Sleepers

Keep a sleep diary that includes the following:

total hours slept each night,

number of awakenings during the night,

approximate amount of time needed to fall asleep.

Over time you can identify any specific patterns or events that may be contributing to your insomnia.

Try to go to bed around the same time each night. This will help your body regulate its sleep schedule. If you simply cannot fall asleep, you may have to reduce your sleep time until your body becomes fatigued and sleep is inevitable.

Earplugs are an inexpensive way for light sleepers, especially travelers, to combat insomnia. If you’re fed up sleeping with your head tucked under the pillow, this tip may be just the cure you need.

Although noise is the enemy, many light sleepers can tolerate a consistent noise such as a fan, air conditioner, etc. During the summertime, this is the perfect way for insomniacs to drown out disturbances such as automobiles, televisions, or loud neighbors.

Soothing classical background music is a great way to eliminate other noises while relaxing your mind and body. Try listening to some of your favorite music in order to beat insomnia.

Natural Herbs and Supplements Can Lessen Insomnia

Natural herbs are a great way to fight insomnia. Many of these natural sleep aids are also inexpensive to purchase. Like all drugs, you should consult with your doctor or a qualified herbalist before attempting treatment.

Most natural herbs can safely be used to treat insomnia. However, ask your doctor first if you are taking any medications or plan on using prescription sleep aids along with natural herbs.

A herb called valerian has proven especially effective in helping insomnia patients. This natural sleep aid allows patients to fall asleep quicker and helps them achieve a sounder sleep state necessary for dreams and restful sleep to occur.

Corydalis is a herb that both relaxes insomnia sufferers and lessens physical pain due to other illnesses that may be the root cause of insomnia.

Chamomile is a well known herb that can be consumed in the form of tea or as an extract. In addition to treating insomnia, chamomile helps reduce stress and depression.

Light sleepers may want to try lemon balm to lessen the effects of insomnia. This natural herb is popular for treating mild insomnia cases since it effectively reduces stress and anxiety levels.

Rozerem, a Non-Addictive Sleep Aid for Light Sleepers and Insomniacs

If you’ve suffered from insomnia for an extended period of time, you may be familiar with a new prescription sleep aid called Rozerem. Rozerem is unique from other sleep drugs as it does not cause dependence or harmful side effects.

Rozerem can be taken safely by most insomnia patients for an extended time. However, it is not necessary to take Rozerem on a daily basis. Simply take the Rozerem tablets on the days you have trouble sleeping.

Although Rozerem does not cause excess grogginess, insomnia sufferers should refrain from potentially harmful activities like alcohol consumption while using this sleep aid.

Q: What is the active ingredient in Rozerem?

A: The active ingredient in Rozerem is a sedative or hypnotic called ramelteon.

Q: How does Rozerem work on insomnia?

A: Rozerem targets the part of the brain that control’s the body’s sleep-wake cycle. Rozerem works as a sleep aid by helping you to relax, fall asleep and stay asleep.

Q: I have heard that some sleep aids can be addictive. Is Rozerem habit-forming?

A: Unlike some other sleep aids Rozerem is not a controlled substance, which means it is not subject to certain government restrictions that apply to drugs that can cause addiction. In fact, there is no scientific evidence to suggest that Rozerem leads to abuse or dependence. Still, Rozerem should be used with care under the guidance of a licensed physician.

Q: Will I feel groggy or tired the morning after taking Rozerem?

A: Most people who take Rozerem do not experience morning-after tiredness or grogginess.

Q: What should I discuss with my doctor before taking Rozerem?

A: Make sure to discuss your complete medical history with your healthcare provider before taking Rozerem, including the following:

How long you have had insomnia and what might have prompted the condition.

All drug allergies, especially to any ingredient contained in Rozerem.

All other medications you are taking, including another sleep aid, prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

If you have a history of alcohol or drug addiction.

If you have liver disease.

If you suffer from sleep apnea – a condition where you stop breathing temporarily during sleep.

If you have lung problems such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchitis, or emphysema.

If you have a history of depression or mental illness.

If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.

If you are 65 years or older.

Q: How should I take Rozerem?

A: Observe the following precautions before and while you take Rozerem:

Only take Rozerem under the supervision of your healthcare provider, irrespective of whether you have used either this sleep aid or another sleep aid before.

Before you start taking Rozerem, read the patient information that comes with the medicine. But be aware that it is not a substitute for the advice of a licensed physician.

Take Rozerem orally, with a full glass of water. You can take it with or without food, as directed by your doctor. However, do not take Rozerem with or soon after a high-fat meal.

Take Rozerem half an hour before going to bed.

Inform your doctor if your insomnia symptoms do not improve (or if they worsen) after using Rozerem for 7 to 10 nights.

Rozerem is intended for use as a short-term sleep aid only. Do not take Rozerem for more than two weeks without consulting a doctor, even if it does not help your insomnia.

Q: What are the possible side effects of Rozerem?

A: Most people who use Rozerem as a sleep aid do not experience any serious side effects. Some of the more common Rozerem side effects include: dizziness, tiredness, daytime drowsiness, diarrhea, and nausea. These Rozerem side effects are typically mild and normally do not result in the patient discontinuing treatment. Some people have reported that after using Rozerem, they engaged in activities that they later did not remember. If this occurs, or if you develop any Rozerem side effects that concern you, seek medical attention immediately.

Q: What are the possible allergic reactions to Rozerem?

A: If you are allergic to ramelteon or to any other ingredient in Rozerem, make sure you inform your doctor before taking this medication. A very serious allergic reaction to Rozerem is unlikely, but talk to your doctor immediately if one develops. Possible symptoms of an allergic reaction include:

Difficulty breathing.

Rash, itching, or hives.

Severe dizziness.

Q: Are there any other drugs I should avoid while taking Rozerem?

A: Before you begin taking Rozerem, inform your doctor about all other prescription and over-the-counter medications you are taking, including vitamins and herbal supplements. Rozerem side effects may be aggravated and could become more dangerous if the sleep aid is used along with:

Children are full of dreams, thought Craig, putting the prescription of Rozerem on top of his fridge. Wish I could borrow some. And Chelsea, who was very precocious at seven years old and who had already mastered castling in chess, took her time at his kitchen table with her latest move and asked, "Still having trouble falling asleep?"

"You know I got to stop being so honest with you and your mother," said Craig, tousling her blonde bangs. "And yes, I am. But my doctor gave me this drug called Rozerem."

"Rozerem… Rozerem," she said, pronouncing it carefully as if trying the word on for size. With careless abandon, she nudged her bishop, putting him into check. "That’s good. My Mommy says you have something called insomnia, and you catched it in Africa."

He smiled and moved a pawn. That observation, he thought, has got to be worth at least one glass of chocolate milk – besides a bribe was useful when you’ve lost both knights and a rook. "Caught it, not ‘catched’, and no, I didn’t catch anything in Africa. But your Mom’s right, I need the Rozerem for insomnia."

"Because you saw bad things there?" prompted Chelsea. "I thought Africa was supposed to be pretty."

"Africa’s beautiful, but it’s not Africa’s fault I have to take Rozerem," he explained, moving a pawn to save his Queen. "In the place where I visited, there were people in trouble who needed help, and we built them a dam so they got some clean water, and we cleaned up some bad wells so they wouldn’t get sick, and then some bad soldiers moved in who wouldn’t let us help them anymore."

Chelsea’s eyes stayed on the board with fierce concentration, but he had been aware for some time she was quite skillful at multi-tasking. "So you came home. Mommy says you better be careful with taking pills like that. They can be a bad habit."

"Well, you may tell your mother – in fact, you can say this exact thing: ‘Mummy, the doctor says Rozerem isn’t addictive,’ he replied. "Got that?"

She nodded soberly, asked what addictive means, and he explained, stealing a sip of her chocolate milk. They sat for a full minute in silence across the battlefield of chess pieces, and then with the brazen honesty of children, she confided, "Mrs. Gustafson in 401 told Mommy it’s strange you spend so much time with me, a grown man all on your own, and she should be careful, but Mommy told her she’s always careful and you’re an old friend and she’s got a good measure of you and besides, she checks every hour on me."

He took all that in and decided on a neutral "Uh-huh…" He wondered idly if Mrs. Gustafson ought to be taking Rozerem – all that busybodying keeping her up at nights. Jeez. The last thing he needed for his insomnia was the worry of what neighbors thought.

"That’s true, your mother is a very good judge of character," Craig told the little girl, seeing too late he’d lost another pawn. "You don’t get to be an army captain without it."

Chelsea’s face brightened and she giggled. "She used to tease Daddy because she outranked him in Iraq!"

"I remember," he murmured.

He waited for her to say the obvious, but she didn’t. Maybe it was a sign of adjustment, not mentioning how much she missed him. A full year had passed, but the loss would always be with her.

Her eyes strayed to the bottle on top of the fridge, and then there was a furrow of small brows. "So how does Rozerem–" Careful pronunciation there. "How does Rozerem work?"

"Yes!" he declared with a little too much enthusiasm as he finally took away her knight. He expected a seven-year-old pout in response, but she wasn’t pouting, and that put him on his guard. Tiny fingers were poised over the board. "Rozerem," he explained, hoping to distract her, "targets the part of the brain that controls the sleep-wake cycle. Helps you relax, fall asleep and stay asleep." He tapped her nose and added, "And it’s only for me, you understand?"

"Craig, I’m seven, I’m not stupid," she said petulantly, and promptly put him back in check. "I know there’s medicine for grown-ups like this Rozerem stuff, and then there’s, like, stuff for kids. Boy!" Another pause, and she rolled her head and asked, "Do you think you’ll ever see your son again?"

He took a deep breath. "I don’t know, sweetheart."

Eight, he’d be eight by now, if… A thousand ifs on long nights both back there and then the connecting flight through Nairobi after the whole delegation had to flee, and a thousand more ifs because in the movies the hero always stays behind, doesn’t he? Except movie heroes never lose to rebel armies or get told by an insistent U.N. you must leave or face no fly zones. And if Anaya had lived, she’d be… Yes, it had been bad lately, so he needed Rozerem for a short-term solution. The talk therapy was helping, too, he had to admit. He had an appointment next Wednesday.

"Are you ever going to go back?" asked Chelsea. "To Africa?"

"I promised myself I would," he answered, trying to keep his voice casual. "I’m sure they still need engineers… Some day it’ll be possible."

"I bet you’re a good Dad," said Chelsea. "I want to talk to my Mom about making you my new Dad."

"Well, it’s a little more complicated than that, darling," he answered. "For one thing, your Mom likes Harold, and he seems nice, doesn’t he? You should maybe give him a chance."

"Mom says that, too," said Chelsea. "She says some people need practice being around kids and don’t know that much."

"Actually, that’s true," said Craig. "When my son was a baby, he cried a lot in the night and made me lose a lot of sleep, and I didn’t have anything like Rozerem to help me, but then you have to get up for a crying baby." He chuckled as he realized he’d fallen into her speech patterns. "Anyway… I didn’t think I was a very good Dad, but I think I got better. Before I… lost him."

"Wasn’t your fault," said Chelsea, striking a loyal note. "We should stop. The game, I mean."

"Quitting while you’re ahead, huh?" he teased.

She jumped off the stool and gave him a very mature look. "Craig, it’s checkmate in two moves."

Now that, he decided, was scary. Seven years old.

"When do you take your Rozerem?" she asked him out of the blue.

He shrugged, mystified by the point of the question. "I don’t know." He went to check the bottle. "The label says ‘Take Rozerem half an hour before going to bed.’ There."

"Do you want to watch Shrek the Third with me?" she asked, and he understood why she was so curious about timing.

"Have to pass, kiddo. Why don’t you watch Mulan again with Harold. It’ll be good – you can teach him the songs."

She said okay and before she hurried off, she turned on her heel and impulsively gave him a hug. For the briefest instant, he felt lifted, transported. He rubbed his wet eyes before she noticed. Then he watched her go down the hall, making sure she got back inside okay and listened for the turn of the lock. He knew Linda or Harold was home, but it was good to make sure Chelsea got there okay.

He flicked on the news then made himself a cup of decaf, eyes absently wandering to the Rozerem still sitting on the fridge. He smiled, remembering how she had practiced the name in her small mouth. Rozerem. He was confident he would sleep tonight. He had Rozerem, and he knew there was healing comfort in certain kinds of company.

If you’ve ever worked the late night shift or a swing shift, you know how hard it is to get enough quality sleep. Forget about a good night’s rest, you just want 6 or 7 hours of uninterrupted shuteye.

While working an unusual shift doesn’t actually qualify as a sleep disorder, many employees who work late hours struggle with insomnia on a regular basis. For these people, prescription Rozerem may offer significant relief.

Rozerem is a unique type of sleeping pill designed to help you fall asleep quicker and stay asleep. Unlike other sleep aids, Rozerem can safely be taken for an extended period without the risk of addiction. In fact, Rozerem is the first sleep medication on the market to be categorized as a "non-controlled sleep aid" by the FDA.

How Working Nights Can Tick Off Your Circadian Clock

We all run on an internal time clock that decides when our body should rest and when we should wake. This internal clock follows a set 24 hour time frame called the circadian rhythm. In addition to controlling our sleep cycle, the circadian clock is also responsible for regulating other functions in the body including hormone levels, heart rate, metabolism, and body temperature.

Changing your sleep pattern is not as simple as you might think. Even when you feel tired or exhausted, your circadian clock may be telling your body it’s time to get up and at ‘em (jet lag is a prime example.) Attempting to upset or alter the balance of your internal clock can lead to stress, anxiety, illness, and insomnia.

Unfortunately most folks can’t decide what hours they will work. Many are required to work the night shift, even if it causes turmoil to their health, emotional state, or relationships. Thankfully Rozerem can treat all of these issues and have you feeling better in no time.

Will I Have to Take Rozerem Long Term?

One of the many benefits of Rozerem is you only take the pills when you need them. If you’re no longer having trouble falling or remaining asleep, simply stop taking your Rozerem.

Like any drug, results from Rozerem will vary among patients. Some people may need to take Rozerem for several months while others may start to feel normal within weeks. Whatever the case, Rozerem is safe to take until you’ve reacquainted yourself with the Sandman.

What Side Effects From Rozerem Should I Be Aware Of?

Although most patients respond well to Rozerem, mild side effects may occur. Some of the more common ones include: headache, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, drowsiness, or sleeping for an exceptionally long period of time.

These side effects may disappear as the body adjusts. However, if you experience any extreme or unusual symptoms from Rozerem, don’t hesitate to contact your doctor immediately.

When Is the Best Time to Take Rozerem?

You should take Rozerem about half an hour before bedtime. This will give the medication time to start working before you hit the sack, so you spend less time tossing and turning.

While Rozerem can safely be taken with food, you should not take the pills if eating a meal high in fat. If you frequently consume fast food, wait a few hours afterward before taking Rozerem.

Don’t take Rozerem prior to any strenuous activities. If you normally mow the lawn in the morning, don’t take your medication until you’ve completed the task. This will eliminate any safety hazards that may occur due to lack of concentration.

Are There Any Other Ways to Help Me Fall Asleep Faster?

While Rozerem alone may be enough to cure your sleep woes, there are a number of tricks you can try to help beat insomnia. By trying some of these natural methods, you may even shorten the length of time you need to take Rozerem.

Make your bedroom as dark as possible. Block out unwanted sun rays with light resistant shades or draperies. You may even wish to purchase special eye shades to further reduce the effects of light.

Restrict your diet for at least three hours before bedtime. Cut out any stimulants such as coffee, tea, or soft drinks. If you must drink liquids shortly before sleep time, have herbal tea. Limiting your sugar intake throughout the day may prove helpful too.

Try to go to bed at the same time each day. Although this may be a bit difficult for night-shift workers, try not to let your bedtime fluctuate by more than an hour each day. Make a point to schedule daytime activities so they don’t interfere with your sleep pattern. And shut off the phone ringer before you retire to bed.

Exercising on a regular basis is a great way to improve both your sleep and overall health. However, for people who work late hours, exercising when you come home in the morning should be avoided. You may think exercising before bed will help you sleep better, but actually it stimulates the body, making it more difficult to fall sleep. Instead, try exercising right when you wake up or shortly before work.

Stay cool. Sleeping well during the summer months can be the most challenging. Not only do you have to deal with long hours of sunlight but also warm temperatures. Keep your bedroom about five degrees cooler than normal before lying down to sleep.

Help your body wind down before going to bed. By learning to relax, you can make sleeping during the day less stressful. One of the best ways to soothe your body and mind is by listening to classical music. Turning on your favorite tunes can also help to reduce outside noise.

(The true story of an insomniac)

You learn some very interesting things when you lie awake all night. For instance, you learn you can compose a song to the rhythm of your husband’s snoring. You realize that your pets are not sleeping either and are up to no good. You count your blinks — 26 a minute. The dripping tap demonstrates the cruel effectiveness of Chinese water torture. There is no one awake in your whole neighborhood at three in the morning yet somehow there are always cars going by.

You may be wondering how I came to collect all these interesting facts. It’s simple. I have insomnia. Insomnia has become a regular part of my life. In my 20s I could sleep anytime, anywhere and I loved it. I miss quality sleep. I am not sure when it all changed.

Before I discovered Rozerem, I found out just how much insomnia can affect your life. I dreaded bedtime, wondering all day if I would be able to sleep. I was cranky and I forgot what it felt like to be normal. At work I had trouble focusing and was generally not fun to be around. I think my co-workers wanted me to solve my insomnia problem as much as I did.

I began to gain weight from munching on snacks at night. And my husband’s expectations of romance were met with irritability. I could barely function and I was not enjoying my life. I was too tired to exercise, even though I heard exercise was a great way to combat insomnia.

Before I found a treatment that worked, every evening was an unwanted visit to the unknown happenings of the night. I discovered that there is nothing on TV late at night except infomercials. I have to say, when you are that tired, some of those products sound really cool. As I would watch the latest cleaning product demonstrated, it only reminded me that I was too tired to keep up with my housework.

Desperately Seeking Sleep

I had heard of sleep aids. I knew there were herbal, over-the-counter and prescription sleep aids but I didn’t want the side effects and really didn’t want to get addicted. I tried an over-the-counter product but it left me feeling zoned out the next day. What good is a great night’s sleep if you have brain fog when you wake up and go to work?

I paid a visit to my local health food store to try one of their herbal products. I noticed no effect after three nights of taking them. I take that back, they did make me feel a bit nauseous. That was not really the effect I was looking for.

It was actually my husband who made me try Rozerem. I had just finished singing him the latest song I wrote to his snoring rhythms and describing how he looks like while he sleeps (not good). He said enough was enough. I had to try something. A co-worker of his had tried several prescription sleep aids and said that Rozerem was the best, bar none.

The way she described it, Rozerem seemed like the right fit for me. I found an online pharmacy called eDrugstore.md, consulted with their physician, and placed my order. I prayed that Rozerem would work. I was so tired of writing all these "hit" songs (they made me want to hit something!) when I should be sleeping.

After I took my first Rozerem at 10 pm on a Wednesday, I laid in bed thinking that this was never going to work. I looked at the alarm clock – 10:15 pm. Finally I jumped up angry and glanced at the clock. It read 7:15.

Wait a minute. Is it morning? I hadn’t even noticed getting drowsy and falling asleep. I slept for nine hours solid… for the first time in years! I was actually alert and ready to go. I danced in the shower and whistled all the way to work.

I hoped that the first night wasn’t a fluke. So on the second night, after taking my Rozerem, I lay quietly, waiting to feel that moment of drowsiness. The moment never came. I just woke up in the morning, again unable to remember falling asleep.

I used to be deeply concerned about getting hooked on prescription sleep aids or any other strong medication. But the Sleep Aids Articles I found on eDrugstore.md reassured me that Rozerem is not a narcotic drug and has been studied extensively for dependency. The studies showed Rozerem doesn’t affect the portion of the brain that’s linked with dependence, so I can quit taking it at any time. What a relief!

Is Rozerem Right for Your Insomnia?

If you’re like me and you have concerns about taking prescription sleep aids, you may not know what to expect from Rozerem. But the beauty of Rozerem is that it works with minimal side effects for most people. Of course individuals must see for themselves how it works with their body.

I have got to the point now where I only need Rozerem two or three times a week. I think I have established a pattern that my body is familiar with. It’s nice to know that my Rozerem is only inches from me on my night stand if I get insomnia. It really takes the pressure off me and I feel more relaxed… which helps me sleep even better!

Sure, I could have been the next Britney Spears with my "Snoring Songs" but I’ll take solid sleep over fame and riches any day. I am doing well at work. I feel energetic for the first time in a long time — even energetic enough to stay awake a little later to spend "quality time" with my hubby.

Meanwhile, I sent my husband’s co-worker a bouquet of flowers and a thank you card for recommending Rozerem. I told her about eDrugstore.md and how much less Rozerem actually costs there. She sent me cookies for sharing the money-saving tip.

I think that whoever discovered Rozerem should win the Nobel Peace Prize for bringing peaceful sleep back into my life. And everyone who knows me agrees!

Signed,

Sleeping Beauty, a happy Rozerem user and ex-insomniac
