When you stop smoking, there may be a change in how these and other medicines work for you. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
Chantix works in two ways to help you stop smoking. It works to block the effects of nicotine, reducing the pleasure reward of smoking. And it provides some nicotine effects to ease the severity of cravings and withdrawal symptoms. This dual action makes it easier for many patients to stop smoking.
Like Zyban, Chantix does not contain nicotine so patients can take Chantix while using nicotine replacement products like gum and patches to help them stop smoking. Independent studies have shown that Chantix helped more people stop smoking than Zyban (44% with Chantix vs. 30% with Zyban).
Choose a quit date when you will stop smoking. Then start taking Chantix 7 days before your quit date. This lets Chantix build up in your system. You begin by taking one tablet a day for three days, then increase to two a day until treatment is over. You can keep smoking during this time. Make sure you try to stop smoking on your quit date. If you slip, try again. Some people need a few weeks for Chantix to work. Most people will keep taking Chantix for up to 12 weeks. Take Chantix after eating and with a full glass of water.
The most common side effects of Chantix are nausea, changes in dreaming, constipation, gas and vomiting. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor promptly. A serious allergic reaction to Chantix is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
