Speak with your doctor if you are pregnant or nursing, in order to weigh potential risks against the benefit of taking Clarinex.
No known drug interactions are available, however Clarinex should not be taken by patients who are hypersensitive to any of its ingredients, or to loratadine. Tell your doctor about all medications, supplements, etc. that you are taking or may take.
Clarinex works by blocking the action of histamine released by the immune system, thus relieving allergy symptoms. When you are exposed to an allergen, a specific type of white blood cell called the mast cell, located in the membrane lining the nose and sinuses, releases a chemical called histamine. Histamine attaches to receptors on nearby blood vessels, causing them to dilate or enlarge, leading to redness, swelling, itching, and changes in the secretions. Antihistamines block the histamine receptors, preventing these membrane changes and the resulting symptoms. Antihistamines also block histamine from stimulating nerve endings, which can cause itching and other symptoms.
Unlike some over-the-counter and prescription antihistamines, Clarinex does not cause drowsiness at the recommended dosage. Clarinex can be safely used to treat seasonal allergies in adults who at the same time suffer from mild-to-moderate asthma. Clarinex is not approved for the treatment of asthma.
Always take your medication as prescribed by your doctor. In general, Clarinex is taken once a day for 24-hour relief from the symptoms of year-round and seasonal allergies. Clarinex may be taken with or without food. Consumption of fruit juices does not affect the effectiveness of Clarinex. It is usually best to take your medication at the same time each day.
In clinical studies for seasonal and year-round allergies, the most common side effects with Clarinex (desloratadine) 5mg tablets were similar to placebo and included sore throat, dry mouth and fatigue.
