Nasacort AQ should only be used by patients over the age of 2. Patients using corticosteroids that weaken the immune system are more susceptible to infections and should avoid exposure to chickenpox or measles. Talk with your doctor if you recently had nasal ulcers, nasal surgery, or trauma. Talk with your doctor if you have a history of eye problems or experience a change in vision. Be sure to speak with your doctor before taking Nasacort if you are pregnant or nursing. Intranasal corticosteroids, including Nasacort AQ, may cause slowed growth in children. Use only as directed by your health care provider.
Patients who have a history of hypersensitivity to triamcinolone acetonide or any other ingredient in Nasacort should not use Nasacort.
The active ingredient in Nasacort AQ is triamcinolone acetonide, a synthetic fluorinated corticosteroid that helps prevent inflammation of the nasal tissue. The precise mechanism of corticosteroid antiallergic action is unknown.
Patients may see improvement in some symptoms beginning on the first day of treatment. However, like other corticosteroid allergy treatments, it generally takes one week of use to feel a full benefit.
Prime Nasacort AQ nasal spray before using for the first time by shaking the contents well and releasing 5 sprays into the air away from the face. It will remain adequately primed for two weeks. If the product is not used for more than 2 weeks, then it can be adequately reprimed with one spray. Shake Nasacort AQ nasal spray well before each use. Blow your nose to clear the nasal passage before using the medication. If passages are blocked, a nasal decongestant may be used first (for a maximum of 3 to 5 days) to open the passages allowing proper penetration of the medication.
Be sure to aim spray away from the middle of the nose, that is, away from the nasal septum and toward the inflamed areas inside the nasal passages. Use this medication exactly as prescribed. It must be used routinely/daily to be effective.
Adults: Starting and maximum dose is 220 mcg/day (two sprays in each nostril once daily).
Children: Starting dose is 110 mcg/day (one spray in each nostril once daily). Speak with your local healthcare provider before administering Nasacort to a child 12 or under.
Although improvement in some patient symptoms may be seen within the first day of treatment, maximum benefit may not be reached for up to one week. Do not increase your dose or use Nasacort more frequently than directed without your doctor's approval. It may take a few days before the benefits of the medication are noticed.
Common side effects of Nasacort AQ include sore throat, headache and nosebleeds. If you have an increase in nosebleeds after using Nasacort AQ or the inside of your nose hurts, contact your healthcare provider. Tell your doctor if you have any side effect that bothers you or that does not go away.
