Medication Overview

Nasonex is a prescription intranasal corticosteroid approved to treat symptoms associated with seasonal and perennial allergies. It works for indoor allergies, such as pet dander, mold, and dust mites. It also works for outdoor allergies, such as pollen, weeds, and trees. Nasonex is the only prescription medication that is specifically indicated to treat seasonal allergies.

How does Nasonex work?

As with many medications, doctors do not fully understand the exact mechanism that allows Nasonex to work. The active ingredient in Nasonex is mometasone furoate monohydrate, a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation.

Why choose Nasonex?

Nasonex works rapidly, with some patients seeing results in as little as 12 hours. However, some patients will not experience complete relief from allergy symptoms for one to two weeks. Clinical trails have shown that Nasonex is an effective treatment for both seasonal and perennial allergies. Nasonex is used to treat both indoor and outdoor allergies in adults.

Directions for taking Nasonex

Nasonex can be taken once per day. In patients suffering from seasonal allergies, itís best to start taking Nasonex at least two weeks prior to the beginning of pollen season. For year-round allergy sufferers, Nasonex may be taken daily.

Itís essential to take your medication regularly to achieve maximum results. Donít stop taking Nasonex, even if your allergy symptoms have subsided. If you forget to take your regular dose, take it as soon as you remember. Continue using Nasonex for at least two weeks, even if you continue to have nasal allergy symptoms. Only take Nasonex as prescribed by your doctor.

Before using Nasonex, prime the pump by pressing down approximately 10 times, or until you see a fine mist. If it has been 7 days or more since your last dose, prime the pump by discharging two doses before using it again. If your symptoms do not improve after two weeks, speak to your doctor about your treatment options. Also tell your doctor if you are experiencing negative side effects while using Nasonex.

Nasonex Precautions

Nasonex should only be used by patients over the age of 2. Nasal corticosteroids should be used with caution, if at all, in patients with active or quiescent tuberculous infection of the respiratory tract, or in untreated fungal, bacterial, systemic viral infections, or ocular herpes simplex. Talk with your doctor if you recently had nasal ulcers, nasal surgery, or trauma. Be sure to speak with your doctor before taking Nasonex if you are pregnant or nursing. Patients using corticosteroids that weaken the immune system are more susceptible to infections and should avoid exposure to chickenpox or measles. Intranasal corticosteroids may cause slowed growth in children. Use only as directed by your health care provider. If you are using another medication that is also given by nasal inhalation, ask your doctor which medication you should use first, and how long you should wait between the medications.

Drug Interactions

Although no drug interactions are listed in the prescribing information for Nasonex, inform your doctor of all other medications, supplements, etc. that you take or may take, prior to beginning treatment with Nasonex. Discontinue Nasonex if you experience hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients in Nasonex.
