Patanol (olopatadine hydrochloride ophthalmic solution) 0.1% is a prescription eye drop for the treatment of the signs and symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis (itching and redness in the eyes due to allergies). Patanol should not be administered to children under the age of 3. Speak with your doctor if you are pregnant or nursing, in order to weigh potential risks against the benefits of Patanol. If you wear contact lenses, Patanol solution should be used at least 10 minutes before you put in your contacts. Or use Patanol after you take your contacts out. Never share your eye drops with anyone else. To prevent contaminating the dropper tip and solution, care should be taken not to touch the eyelids or surrounding areas with the dropper tip of the bottle. Keep bottle tightly closed when not in use. Use caution engaging in activities requiring clear vision such as driving or using machinery because your vision may be temporarily blurred or unstable after applying this drug.
Tell your doctor about all medications, supplements, etc. that you are taking, or may take, before beginning treatment with Patanol. Tell your doctor your medical history, especially with contact lens use, and share any allergies you have.
Patanol is an inhibitor of the release of histamine from the mast cell and a relatively selective histamine H1 antagonist that inhibits the in vivo and in vitro type-1 immediate hypersensitivity reaction including inhibition of histamine-induced effects on human conjunctival epithelial cells. This means that Patanol blocks a specific type of histamine receptor in the body. Allergic reactions are partly caused by the release of histamine from certain cells in the body.
Patanol is a unique product that works in minutes to relieve itchy, red, watery allergy eyes. When used as prescribed by your doctor, generally twice a day, Patanol also prevents allergy symptoms from coming back.
The recommended dose is one drop in each affected eye two times per day at an interval of 6 to 8 hours.
Headaches have been reported in 7 percent of patients. Other side effects were reported in less than 5 percent of patients, including: blurred vision, burning or stinging, redness, dryness of the eye, cold syndrome, eyelid swelling, or a feeling as if something was in their eye. If side effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not experience side effects. A serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs.
