The Swine Flu outbreak continues to spread and many Americans are taking precautions. Although a vaccine may not be ready until at least mid-October, 2009, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have named two medications that are effective in the treatment of Swine Flu.

These medications are Tamiflu (Oseltamivir) and Relenza (Zanamivir). Both of these medications can be prescribed by a doctor before a patient experiences the onset of the flu. However, only in certain circumstances should the products be taken before flu symptoms exist. The above antiviral drugs are effective when started within 48 hours of the first symptoms, so many consumers have chosen to keep Tamiflu on hand. Steps to Prevent Swine Flu

  1. Cover your mouth and nose.
    • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick.
  2. Clean your hands.
    • Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs. Using a hand sanitizer is recommended, especially after touching items in public.
  3. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
    • Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose or mouth.
  4. Practice other good health habits.
    • Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids and eat nutritious food. Taking a daily vitamin, as well as Vitamin C can help your immune system.
  5. Avoid close contact.
    • Avoid close contact with people who are sick. Keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.
  6. Stay home when you are sick.
    • If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick (some sources are recommending that you isolate yourself for at least seven days for the Swine Flu). You will help prevent others from catching your illness.
